Xerox Joins Forces with Xeikon: Digital Packaging Printing Market Enters a New Era of Competition Among Industry Giants

2026-09-07

The global digital printing and packaging industry is rapidly evolving toward shorter runs, faster turnaround times, and highly customized production. This shift is prompting established giants in office and commercial printing equipment to accelerate their expansion into industrial-scale production applications.

Xerox, a global leader in office and production printing, recently announced a strategic partnership with Flint Group Digital’s Xeikon business, officially known as Flint Group Digital Xeikon (FGDX). Under the agreement, Xerox will leverage Xeikon’s proven core digital printing technologies to launch and sell a new range of digital printing systems under the Xerox brand. The partnership marks a major strategic step forward for Xerox in the digital packaging, industrial labels, and high-end commercial printing markets.

Integrating Xeikon’s Core Technologies to Target High-Growth Markets Through a Proven Ecosystem

As a major partnership in the production digital printing sector, the agreement enables Xerox to directly integrate Xeikon’s extensive technological expertise in digital packaging and label printing into its production printing hardware portfolio.

Through this strategic combination, printing systems powered by Xeikon technology will be fully integrated into Xerox’s established production ecosystem, including its automated workflow software, post-press finishing solutions, global sales network, remote services, and worldwide technical support infrastructure.

In response to printing companies’ growing demand for short-run production, version control, ultra-fast turnaround, and high-value applications, the two companies aim to enhance customers’ overall productivity through an integrated hardware-and-software approach.

Walter Benz, President of Flint Group Digital Xeikon, noted that the printing industry is evolving rapidly, creating strong demand for reliable digital tools that combine responsiveness, productivity, and application flexibility. By leveraging Xerox’s extensive global distribution network, the partnership will enable more printing companies to gain access to Xeikon’s proven and mature technologies.

Terry Antinora, President of Xerox Global Production Print Services, also stated that the combination of the two companies provides a comprehensive end-to-end production platform and represents a key milestone in the development of Xerox’s production printing business.

According to the partnership plan, the first new equipment to be sold and serviced by Xerox will carry the Xerox brand and feature Xerox-developed control software and integrated services. Full specifications and availability details are expected to be officially announced to the industry over the coming months.

Targeting Three Strategic Growth Areas: First Inkjet Label Press Opens the Door to Packaging

The deep partnership with Xeikon directly supports Xerox’s ambitious production printing roadmap announced in February this year. Antinora previously identified three strategic growth areas for Xerox: sheet-fed inkjet, packaging and label printing, and continuous-feed inkjet.

From Xerox’s perspective, entering these largely untapped growth markets requires a combination of strategies: developing key underlying technologies in-house while leveraging mature technologies through open partnerships.

The most closely watched technological breakthrough is Xerox’s first major move into industrial packaging production. According to its roadmap, Xerox will launch the first inkjet label press in its history, with a designed line speed of up to 70 meters per minute. This represents a significant transition from Xerox’s traditional office and commercial printing roots toward the industrial packaging printing market.

At the same time, Xerox is preparing a high-speed continuous-feed inkjet system capable of reaching speeds of up to 160 meters per minute. The system is designed to meet the requirements of industrial-scale, high-volume production through high throughput and operational stability.

The new co-developed systems will also complement Xerox’s existing portfolio, including the Iridesse production press, Proficio PX500/PX300 presses, IJP900 inkjet system, and PrimeLink series, creating a more comprehensive equipment portfolio across different production applications.

Partnership with Adobe Brings Generative AI to Prepress, While Hardware Upgrades Extend the Life of Existing Systems

Alongside its hardware expansion, Xerox is also making significant progress in digital software and prepress innovation.

The company has demonstrated AI-powered generative prepress enhancement capabilities developed through a deep collaboration with Adobe. The technology is designed to fundamentally simplify traditional prepress proofing and visual rendering processes.

With simple instructions, designers can use AI to automatically add customized gloss effects, tactile textures, or variable personalized design elements to printed products. This significantly lowers the barrier to transforming creative concepts into industrial production, while also creating greater opportunities for commercial and packaging customers to develop higher-value applications and premium products.

During previous technology roadshows, the newly architected Proficio PX300, PX500, and IJP900 series reportedly attracted substantial commercial orders, demonstrating strong market recognition of Xerox’s next-generation digital printing platforms.

In the mid-range and entry-level production printing segments, Xerox is also maintaining a steady pace of product development. The new PrimeLink monochrome and color production printing systems are expected to enter global markets in the third quarter of 2026, addressing demand for lightweight digital production, quick-printing, and on-demand applications.

In addition, Xerox has previewed an underlying electronic component upgrade program for its established Iridesse platform. By systematically enhancing hardware computing capabilities and motherboard response speed, the upgrade is intended to allow existing customers to benefit from increased processing performance without replacing their entire printing systems.

From partnering with Xeikon to complete its packaging portfolio to leveraging AI to transform prepress efficiency, Xerox is accelerating its transition beyond its traditional office and commercial printing identity. The company is moving toward becoming a more comprehensive provider of digital packaging and industrial printing solutions.
